Question 2 · Undertone

Hair Color to Match Skin Tone

Your undertone answer moves shades up or down the list. Warm answers rank golden, honey, caramel and copper higher; cool answers rank ash, platinum, mushroom and burgundy; neutral undertones keep the softer shades of both.

  • Not sure? Look at your wrist veins in daylight, or hold gold and silver jewelry to your face.
  • Your skin depth and eye color add favorites; a few shades are flagged to skip.
  • The photos show one model in a warm and a cool blonde, in the same light.

Question 4 · Natural color

Pick a Hair Color Near Yours

The quiz compares each shade's level with your selected natural color. A smaller difference gives you a more subtle starting point; a much lighter target may need more preparation and upkeep.

  • Each pick shows an estimated level difference based on your answers.
  • Your starting color and past treatments affect the work needed.
  • Ask a colorist about the steps needed for a much lighter shade.

Question 5 · Your goal

Right Hair Color for Your Goal

Your last answer decides which color families are in the running. Darker keeps to browns and reds, bold adds fashion colors and gray, and the other goals draw from natural, blonde, red and highlight shades.

  • Shades to skip say why, such as a tone clash or a big lift.
  • Eye color adds a few favorites, such as copper and auburn for green eyes.
  • The picks are a starting point; the photo preview is the real test.

Neutral undertones can borrow from both sides — the softer shades work best. Deep skin wears rich, saturated colors beautifully, while very ashy shades can look flat against it.

What Hair Color Suits Me FAQ

Answers to the questions people ask before they choose a new color.

Usually the shade that matches your undertone and stays within about two levels of your natural color — it flatters your skin and is the easiest to live with. The quiz above ranks every shade on those rules, and the preview shows which one really looks best on your face.

Start with your undertone (the vein and jewelry tests), then your natural depth and your contrast. Warm undertones suit golden, honey, caramel and copper; cool undertones suit ash, platinum, mushroom and burgundy; neutral undertones can wear the softer shades of both.

Fair skin looks lovely in strawberry blonde, soft honey or ash; medium and tan skin glow in caramel, chestnut and balayage; deep skin carries rich copper, burgundy, jet black and honey highlights. Undertone matters more than depth, so choose the warm or cool version that matches yours.

After the quiz, upload a clear, front-facing photo and preview each recommended shade on your own hair, with a before/after slider. The tool aims to change only the hair color, so compare the result with your original.

The recommendations come from clear, colorist-style rules rather than an AI guess, so you can see why each shade was picked. AI does the preview: it recolors the hair in your own photo so you can judge the result.

Brown eyes are the easiest to match. Caramel, honey highlights, chocolate brown and auburn bring out warm flecks, while jet black and burgundy make dark eyes look deeper. Green and hazel eyes glow next to copper and auburn; blue eyes pop against golden blonde, copper or jet black.

Going darker is kinder to your hair and needs no bleach, but it is hard to undo later. Going lighter brightens the face, yet every level of lift means bleach, toner and more frequent root touch-ups. Staying within two levels is the safest choice.

It uses the rules colorists use, so it narrows the field well — but it cannot see your skin, and lighting, freckles and personal taste all matter. Treat the six picks as a shortlist and let the photo preview, and your colorist, make the final call.

The quiz is free and needs no account. Previewing shades on your photo costs a few credits per preview, and new accounts get free credits to start.
